Week 1 – Player Movement, Enemy Movement, and the Old Merchant

Latest game features:

This week was the first publishing of the game and included a wide range of game features. These features mainly included player movement, enemy movement, and the rendering of the old merchant and his house. However, other features were also included such as the parallax effect of the background, the tile map, some experimentation with trail and particle rendering, gold dispersion when enemies are defeated, and basic-level design ideas.

The player can currently run, dash, attack, and stand. The player also has animation, coyote time and jump buffer time to make the gameplay a little more comfortable.

Basic enemy movement was also implemented in the update so the enemies can move back and forth over an area, animate correctly, and chase the player when the player is detected. Polishing of this movement and detection is required but the enemies are operational.

The old merchant and his hut were both included in the update, however, currently, he is just an animation and has no mechanics.

Feedback:

After some game testing and peer review, it was very evident that the player jumping had some issues. Due to the landing conditions not being specific to the ground, the player could super jump off a wall and exit the map. Feedback also included some annoyance with the coins as they couldn’t be collected.

Positive feedback given was largely about the feel and responsiveness of the controls, the parallax effect, and the combat feel. The movement is considered highly important to this game as Delver is very much a platformer that requires the player to travel over long distances fast and defeat enemies at a quick but manageable pace.

Features soon to be included:

  • The jump glitch will be fixed
  • gold will be able to be collected
  • The Old Merchant will have a function in Delver
  • Proper levels and gameplay will be created
  • A start menu will be seen before initiating the game
  • Travel from the main area to each level will be made
